WATERS OF OBLIVION: The British Invasion of the Rio De La Plata 1806-07
On 7 July 1807, Lieutenant General John Whitelocke stood amidst the burning wreckage of some houses in Buenos Aires as he contemplated the terms of a surrender document to which he was about to put his name.It was the final act in Britain’s disastrous attempt to add the Spanish colony of the Rio de la Plata to the possessions of His Britannic Majesty King George III.After two days of intensive street fighting, the British army had been forced to surrender to a volunteer South American army, considered by them to be little more than an armed rabble. It was to be one of the most shameful campaigns ever fought by a British army. This extraordinary Napoleonic campaign saw the British army in action on the eve of the Peninsular War and featured men such as William Carr Beresford.Denis Pack and Robert ‘Black Bob’ Craufurd, all would rise to great prominence fighting under Wellington in Portugal and Spain.Drawn from English and Spanish sources, The Waters of Oblivion is the first time the story of this remarkable campaign has been told in a single volume since the campaign itself.
