VIMY

VIMY
Meticulous account of the successful storming of Vimy RIdge by the Canadian Corps in April 1917 - a rare Allied success on the western front, and a milestone in the moulding of Canada as a nation.
Just as the names Gallipoli and Pusieux on the Somme resound in Australian history, so the word ‘VImy’ has a special resonance for Canada. The storming and taking of Vimy RIdge by the four divisions of the Canadian Corps during the Battle of Arras in April 1917 was one of the rare undisputed Allied triumphs of the Great War, coming as it did after fruitless French and British attacks on the scarp, which cost the lives of more than 150,000 men. The Canadians themselves suffered 10,000 casualties, but seized their objective in the course of a single morning. This book is a proud and thorough account of the feat written by a Canadian historian with verve and style. Based on interviews with Vimy veterans, ther author sets Vimy in the context of the wider Arras offensive and suggests that Allied Commanders planning other less successful assaults could have learned much from the careful preparations that went into the taking of the ridge, which proved a milestone in the moulding of Canada as a nation.
