TELEGRAM FROM GUERNICA
Brilliant bIography of George Steer, the British war correspondent who brought the horrors of aerial bombing and poison gas to world attention before the Second World War in his reports from Spain and Abyssinia.
Seventy years ago he world awoke to the horrors of aerial bombing that was to devastate so many states and lives in the Second World War largely through the razing of a single town : Guernica, the ancient Basque capital devastated by the planes of Hitler’s Condor Legion flying for Franco during the Spanish Civil War. Immortalised in paint by Picasso, the story of Guernica first reached the outside world via the despatches of George Steer, a brave and dedicated British journalist who visited the still smouldering ruins within hours of the raid and reported the atrocity in The TImes. Guernica may have been Steer’s finest hour, but, as this striking book by a BBC journalist reveals, Steer’s career as a war correspondent encompassed many other hair-raising stories - including the use of poison gas by the Italians in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). This book restores him to the front rank of 20th century war correspondents.
