STORM of STEEL. From the diary of a German Storm-Troop officer on the Western Front.

STORM of STEEL.
From the diary of a German Storm-Troop officer on the Western Front.
As the subtitle indicates, this book, one of the great classics among published memoirs of the Great War, based on the diaries of a German storm-troop officer on the Western Front. Junger joined the 73rd Hanoverian Fusiliers at Orainville, a few miles north of Reims in the French sector, in December 1914. He was a nineteen year old volunteer. He was commissioned in November 1915 in the same regiment, and served with it for the rest of the war, mostly fighting against the BEF - at Arras, the Somme. Langemarck (3rd Ypres), Cambrai and elsewhere. He was wounded some fourteen times and was awarded the Pour le Merité, the equivalent to the VC for a junior officer. He was one of those rare beings who seems to have enjoyed his war despite his wounds. The book is a remarkable record of fortitude and endurance, one that pulls no punches in its descnptions of war in the trenches and one that certainly demonstrates the fighting qualities of the German soldier.
