SMOKE AND MIRRORS : Q-Ships against the U-boats in the First World War

SMOKE AND MIRRORS : Q-Ships against the U-boats in the First World War
Full story of the armed merchantmen which challenged the superiority of the U-boat early in the war.
The Great War was a wake up call to the nations on what was and was not permitted to ‘civilised nations’ in the new era of mass, technological total war. Tanks, poison gas, flame throwers were all used on land and at sea, U-boats sank unarmed merchant ships - a development that Britain’s Admiralty Chief, WInston Churchill, had ruled out as recently as 1913. However, the Allies soon had their own weapon to use in the U-boat war : Q-Ships. These were armed warships cunningly disguised as innocent merchantmen. When challenged by a U-boat, however, the disguise would be dropped and the Q-Ships would engage with all fury. Drawing on material written by survivors from both Q-Ships and U-boats, Deborah Lake tells the fascinating stoiry of this form of un-gentlemanly warfare
