He traces the roots of the current conflict back to the era before the creation of Israel when Jewish immigration to British-controlled Palestine - itself boosted by Hitler’s rise to power - sparked tension with the indiginous Arab Palestinian population. The narrative continues through the declaration of an independent Israel in 1948 - immediately followed by an attack from her furious Arab neighbours; the Sinai war of 1956 which coincided with the Anglo-French occupation of the Suez Canal; the 1967 Six Day War against Egypt, Syria and Jordan - and the subsequent failure of a triumphant yet hubristic Israel to grasp the chance of a permanant peace. After the harder-won victory in the Yom KIppur war in 1973, the story contiues through the Palestinian intifada; the rise and fall of Yasser Arafat’s PLO and the subsequent ascent of such Islamic fun damentalist movements as Hamas - all accompanied by tortuous international attempts to reach a lasting peace.
