SCARS OF WAR, WOUNDS OF PEACE :THE ISRAELI-ARAB TRAGEDY

SCARS OF WAR, WOUNDS OF PEACE :THE ISRAELI-ARAB TRAGEDY
A full account of the Arab-Israeli conflict from Jewish immigration to Palestine, through the wars of 1948,1956,1967 and 1973 down to the terrorism and peace negotiations of today. Written by a former Israeli Foreign MInister, this is an insider’s dispassionate view of an intractible problem that concerns us all.
The conflict between the Jewish state of Israel and the Arab world is probably the most dangerous and protracted problem to bedevil our troubled world. This account of the see-saw struggle, which has fluctuated between short, sharp wars and prolonged periods of ‘peace’ punctuated by terrorism, assassinations and atrocities is a dispassionate view from one side of the lines. Schlomo Ben-Ami is both a historian and a diplomat-turned politician. He was Israel’s former Foreign Minister and took part in the Camp David talks and other negotiations. He traces the roots of the current conflict back to the era before the creation of Israel when Jewish immigration to British-controlled Palestine - itself boosted by Hitler’s rise to power - sparked tension with the indiginous Arab Palestinian population. The narrative continues through the declaration of an independent Israel in 1948 - immediately followed by an attack from her furious Arab neighbours; the Sinai war of 1956 which coincided with the Anglo-French occupation of the Suez Canal; the 1967 Six Day War against Egypt, Syria and Jordan - and the subsequent failure of a triumphant yet hubristic Israel to grasp the chance of a permanant peace. After the harder-won victory in the Yom KIppur war in 1973, the story contiues through the Palestinian intifada; the rise and fall of Yasser Arafat’s PLO and the subsequent ascent of such Islamic fun damentalist movements as Hamas - all accompanied by tortuous international attempts to reach a lasting peace. An indispensible insider’s account of an international conflict which should concern us all.
