ROME ‘44: The Battle For The Eternal City
Enthralling account of the fall of Rome by a twice-wounded veteran of the Italian campaign. The author questions why the campaign was allowed to become one of the war’s bitterest and most bloody slogging matches.
Rome fell to the Allied armies on 6th June 1944 - the same day that Normandy was invaded, and D-Day has certainly eclipsed the fall of the Eternal City in the eyes of historians. Raleigh Trevelyan makes amends for that neglect in this enthralling account of the battle for the Italian capital of which he himself was an eye-witness as a wounded veteran of twenty-one. Trevelyan not only gives us the memories of the Italian campaign as seen from the ground up by himself and other eye-witnesses - civilian as well as military - he also attempts to answer wider strategic questions: why did it take so long for the Allies to reach Rome after the Anzio landings? Were those langings themselves a gross blunder? Did conflict between the Allied commanders and the varied nationalities under their command hinder the campign? Were the Germans simply better soldiers? This book may not hold all the answers - but it courageously raises the questions, while giving an unforgettable portrait of some of the cruellest fighting in the Second World War. One thing is very clear: Italy was was certainly no sideshow.
