ROAD TO SUEZ: The Battle of the Canal Zone

ROAD TO SUEZ: The Battle of the Canal Zone
A study of the root causes of the 1956 Suez Crisis that is still very relevant to the clash of the west and Islam in the MIddle East today.
The disastrous political fallout of the 1956 Suez Crisis - widely seen as marking the final demise of the British Empire - began long before Egypt’s dictator Nasser sparked the crisis by seizing the Suez Canal. The author, Michael T. Thornhill, traces the crisis back to 1951 when Egyptian nationalist activity became a serious problem for a Britain still striving to maintain its imperial role. Drawing on hitherto secret government records, Thornhill tells of the struggle for influence in Egypt between a declining Britain and a rising United States, which, though nominally an ally, had a vestigial hostility to British imperialism. Although both powers viewed with concern the rise of Arab nationalism embodied by Nasser, neither was fully aware of the greater danger of millitant Islam that was still waiting in the wings. This fascinating study should be required reading not only for historians of the British Empire but for all those shaping western policy in the Middle East today.
