Britain fought two wars in Afghanistan in the 19th century - the first culminating in a famously disastrous retreat from Kabul that only one man survived. Forty years later, as this book relates, the British were back, and once again conquered the capital. Yet again the motive was to guard India - the jewel in Britain’s Imperial crown - against a perceived threat from Russia via Afghanistan. In this round of the ‘Great Game’ fight for imperial influence over the sub-continent, Britain’s war aim was to replace a pro-Russian ruler with one friendly to British interests. Researching the story of the second Afghan war, author Brian Robson discovered the only known surviving copy of the suppressed official report into the war among the papers of Field Marshal Lord Roberts - ‘Bobs’ - one of the war’s great heroes. A key episode in Indian imperial history, and one of Queen Victoria’s ‘small wars’ the campaign carries sharp echoes at a time when we are still deeply involved in this most inhospitable of countries and its fierce inhabitants.
