Bartlett, author of several other brilliant books on the Crusades, tells the full story of the decline of the kingdom of Jerusalem whjich culminated in the Crusaders’ catastrophe at Hattin. And an exciting and colourful story it is, in which the Crusaders are not only up against their avowed enemies - the Muslim Saracen armies under the great warrior Saladin - but are also fatally divided among themselves. He describes how the factional feuds between Crusader ‘hawks’ - orders like the Knights Templars and the Hospitallers who wish to extirpate Islam; and the more moderate and realistic ‘doves’ who favour co-existance with the Muslims. The story culminates in Richard I’s ill-starred Third Crusade and his fight with Saladin. At a time when Christian-Muslim tension is once again rife, this book could not be more topical.
