RED BERETS AND THE RED CROSS. The story of the Medical Services in the 1st Airborne Division in World War II

RED BERETS AND THE RED CROSS. The story of the Medical Services in the 1st Airborne Division in World War II
This is a handsomely produced book, on glossy paper with splendid b/w photos. The airborne forces are a popular subject but this book is rare in that it deals with the non-combatant element of the division and does so in some detail. Non-combatant describes its role but certainly not the scenes in which it played its vital part in the various actions. The 1st Airborne Division was formed in November 1941 under the command of Major-General ‘Boy’ Browning. It saw action in N Africa, Sicily, Italy and in NW Europe at Arnhem and Osterbeek where it suffered heavy casualties. The greater part of that battle took place in and around the divisional hospital area, with the dressing stations coming under regular shell and small arms fire and frequently changing hands with the enemy. The division’s final deployment was in Norway immediately after the German surrender. The 1st Airborne was disbanded in November 1945. This most impressive work not only describes the origins and development of the airborne medical services but it also provides a graphic picture of battle, enlivened by personal experiences of those who were there. There is much information on the equipment, medical packs taken into action, loading tables and the airborne medical jeep. There is a nominal roll of RAMC personnel at Arnhem and their units, followed by the Roll of Honour and list of honours and awards
