Operation Chariot: The Raid on St Nazaire

Operation Chariot: The Raid on St Nazaire
Full account of one of WW2’s most suicidally daring Commando operations - the successful but costly attack on St Nazaire’s dry dock in which 5 VCs were won.
The raid on the French port of St Nazaire in March 1942 was one of the most suicidally brave operations carried out by British Commandos during the Second World War. The objective was to destroy or neutralise the vast dry dock, built to take the liner Normandie and the only dock capable of holding the Tirpitz, Bismarck’s sister ship and potentially a fatal threat to trans-Atlantic supply routes. Using an old US destroyer packed with high explosives the plan was to ram the dock gates under the noses of the German defenders. Almost miraculously, the plan worked; but the cost was heavy indeed - both in terms of those killed and wounded on the quaysides, and those taken prisoner who knew there could be no return when they stormed ashore. The 80 decorations awarded after the raid - including five VCs - testify to the courage and initiative displayed by the men of Operation Chariot.
