ORDER of the BRITISH EMPIRE.
On 4th June 1917 The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was instituted by George V as a means of recognizing signal service to the country by any individual serving wherever and in whatever capacity. Unlike the other Orders of Chivalry (apart from the Royal Victorian Order awarded for personal services to the Sovereign), the new Order would have five classes - GBE, KBE, CBE, OBE and MBE. In this splendid book is the history of the Order and it makes fascinating reading, especially all the correspondence involved in the lead-up to its foundation and the argument, confusion and uncertainty involved.
