MUSSOLINI’S ISLAND
Unconventional account of the liberation of Sicily based on the stories of survivors.
‘Mussolini’s Island’ is Sicily - the first Allied target in the conquest of Italy. In fact the title may be misleading since the island was probably the part of Italy least loyal to Mussolini since, by ruthlessly crushing the local Mafia in the 1920s the Fascist dictator had alienated important local interests and created a sullen population which welcomed the allies’ arrival. John Follain, a former Sunday Times correspondent in Rome, goes beyond conventioinal military history to tell the story of the Sicilian campaign, narrating his story through various individuals caught up in the struggle: a Panzer officer; a Royal Naval officer; a young Sicilian girl - as well as legendary commanders like Montgomery and Patton. Based on interviews with dozens of survivors, this is a remarkable account of a little-known campaign.
