MR PUNCH’S HISTORY OF THE GREAT WAR

MR PUNCH’S HISTORY OF THE GREAT WAR
Punch magazine was the visual voice of Britain in the Great War. This collection reproduces cartoons from every stage of the conflict, reflecting fluctuating concerns on the Home Front as well as in the trenches. A must for all WW1 buffs.
For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Punch magazine was the visual voice of Britain. The topical and humorous weekly was most prized for its cartoons, and this beautifully produced book reprints the best of Mr Punch’s responses to the unfolding tragedy of the Great War. Stridently loyal to the official political line of the day, many of the cartoons take swipes at the hate figures of British propaganda - the Kaiser and his son ‘Little Willy’ are perennial targets - but there are also cartoons that hit at ‘conchies’ who refuse to join up; and at US President Woodrow Wilson over his reluctance to join the war. A linking text follows the chief events of the war that the cartoons are commenting on, although the meaning of many is obvious even after nearly a century. A view of the war that would have been familiar to servicemen and civilians alike, it is good that this cartoon commentary is again accessible to us.
