This is a most useful work by a compiler who plainly knows his stuff.The book comprises three parts which are further sub-divided into sections.Thus, all the principal medal headings are covered, viz campaign medals gallantry and meritorious service awards.There are also sections dealing with foreign awards to British subjects and British awards to foreigners, life-saving awards, commemorative and miscellaneous medals.Part Three gives the reader helpful pointers with research techniques and, at the end, are various appendices giving more usefu information, such as the various societies catering for the medal collector and researcher and a guide to further reading.There are 31 extremely high quality colour plates, illustrating both medals and relevant documentation.The compiler lists, in great detail, just about every medal roll in existence up to recent times (some have not yet been released, of course), which will be of enormous benefit to researchers generally and wll probably save much time tracing the roll initially.Also included in the text, at the end of some sections, are a number of case studies to illustrate how much (and sometimes how little) can be discovered from the records.There is almost nothing about medals themselves in the book and the compiler presupposes this knowledge on the part of the reader; to have gone into the whys and wherefores of each medal would have requird a book at least twice the size. An indispensable addition to the researcher’s bookshelf.
