HITLER’S ESPIONAGE MACHINE: German Intelligence Agencies and Operations During World War II

HITLER’S ESPIONAGE MACHINE: German Intelligence Agencies and Operations During World War II
Of the many hazards besetting intelligence agencies worldwide, perhaps the most debilitating are the turf wars that break out between rival secret services in the same state. This book deals with one such notorious example - the truly murderous hostility between German military intelligence, the Abwehr., headed by Admiral Canaris, and the Nazi party’s own intelligence arm, the Sicherheitdienst, or SD, whose chief was the much-feared Reinhard Heydrich, ironically a friend and neighbour of Canaris. The Abwehr’s task of fighting the secret war against the Allies was hamstrung by the fact that Canaris and his deputy, Oster, were secretly working against the Nazi regime. Heydrich and his successors in their turn were intriguing, ultimately successfully, to take over and absorb the Abwehr. Despite this friction, and the utter failure of Nazi intelligence to penetrate Britain, this book shows that Nazi intelligence was worldwide - including the Americas and the Far East - and could be remarkably effective. This well illustrated and detailed account of the Nazis’ secret war is a must for all intelligence and Third Reich buffs.
