HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION TO RUSSIA 1812: (In two volumes)

HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION TO RUSSIA 1812: (In two volumes)
A classic of military history - this is Segur’s account of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia followed by his disastrous retreat from Moscow. Segur was Napoleon’s aide-de-camp, but he is by no means unc ritical of his old masrter.
Segur was a French soldier who served as aide-de-camp at Napoleon’s side through most of his campaigns, and survived to write a classic eye-witness history of the campaigns in 1836. By no means uncritical of the Emperor, this compact two-volume work relates the history of the disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, when Napoleon set out with his huge Grande Armee of half-a-million men to humble Russia as he had humbled the rest of continental Europe. Segur covers the taking of Smolensk and the bloody battle of Borodino in Volume 1, concluding with Napoleon’s entry to Moscow, only to find the conquered city in flames - forcing his withdrawal - the beginning of a long and catastrophic retreat. Volume 2 tells the melancholy story of the great army’s retreat and progressive disintegration, as, harassed by Russian skirmishers and the bitter winter weather, Napoleon’s troops fell by the wayside. Of the 500,000 who had set out for Russia, only 20,000 returned. This is a harrowing but truthful first hand account of one of the greatest military disasters in history.
