HEAD-DRESSES OF THE BRITISH ARMY: YEOMANRY

HEAD-DRESSES OF THE BRITISH ARMY: YEOMANRY
As yeomanry cavalry were volunteer soldiers and expected to find their own clothing, much depended on the amount of money from the commanding officer, the combined purses of the officers or even the men themselves. Thus yeomanry head-dress did not necessarily follow regulation patterns and ranged from obsolete helmets through the current patterns and on to exotic foreign types like the Austrian shakos of the Royal Gloucestershire Yeomanry. With so many variations and deviations it is not possible to tell a continuous story of yeomanry head-dresses. Thus one yeomanry regiment is dealt with at a time, giving as complete a story of the variations within the unit. The reduction of so many Yeomanry regiments to cadres (with the exception of the Royal Yeomanry Regiment) makes this a timely effort to mark their long and valuable services.Cavalry head-dresses clearly marked with regimental numbers and devices might be recognised by the collector but the frequent absence of title and the many changes present difficulties for those who may be lucky enough to possess these old head-dresses.This book may help identify many ancient helmets.
