GEORGE THE FIRST’S ARMY 1714-1727

GEORGE THE FIRST’S ARMY 1714-1727
An historical record of the British army in the early Georgian era with biographies of distinguished soldiers of the day and lists of officers in all regiments that existed during the period.
This massive work of some 960 pages in all is the result of the most painstaking research and dedication and must represent one of the most valuable sources of reference for any military historian, most especially the regimental historian, researching the army, its regiments and personnel at the start of the Hanoverian reign in Britain. In both volumes the author follows the same pattern: a long introduction to the Georgian era during the years covered by each volume, George I’s accession in 1714 to the declaration of war with Spain at the end of December 1718 (vol I), and the last eight and a half years of his reign which ended in June 1727 (vol II), followed by biographies of distinguished soldiers which take up a third of each volume, and then lists of officers in the various regiments, staffs and garrisons with ranks and dates of commission. Among the biographies is that of George Hamilton, First Earl of Orkney and the first Field Marshal in the British Army, appointed in 1736. There have been 138 holders of that rank until abolished some 260 years later. The introductory pieces are, in effect, the history of the British army in the early Georgian era. Here you will read of regiments being raised in response to emergencies such as the Stuart Rebellion of 1715 (the Old Pretender) and being disbanded as soon as the perceived emergency was over. Some of them lived on in the centuries that followed, others simply vanished, never to be seen again. You will also read the lists of the officers who served in them, these lists predate the official Army List that appeared for the first time in 1740. Another feature of this treasury of military history is the amount of contemporary correspondence, personal and official, that is reproduced in the historical introductions, in the memoirs of the distinguished soldiers and in the copious explanatory notes that accompany many of the regimental lists. This truly is a most remarkable record of fourteen years in the history of the British Army at a time when England’s Standing Army had been in existence a little over fifty years (1661).
