G.I. JOHNNY REB: The Uniform of the Confederate Army, 1861-1865

G.I. JOHNNY REB: The Uniform of the Confederate Army, 1861-1865
Full portryal of Confederate uniforms and kit in photos and paintings. Shows how the poor economic state of the south was reflected in their disparate looks and equipment.
The Confederate army which was raised after the southern states seceded from the Union in 1861 had serious problems of supply, equipment and uniform. All the troops had to be raised, kitted out and arrayed from scratch in a war situastion. At first, individual states had their own wildly different styles and uniforms - some in Union blue rather than the familiar rebel grey. Even when such things were standardised, the relative poverty of the south and the increasingly effective northern Naval blockade, meant that there was a large degree of improvisation in the CSA and items of kit were often lifted from the enemy. This volume of contemporary photos and paintings gives a clear and fascinating portrayal of Confederate uniforms and equipment and vividly shows how, as the tide of war turned against the Confederacy, their increasingly parlous position was reflected in the ragged looks of their troops.
