FORGOTTEN BATTLE OF 1066: FULFORD

FORGOTTEN BATTLE OF 1066: FULFORD
Re-discovery of the forgotten battle - and battlefield - of Fulford, where the northern Saxon earls Edwin and Morcar tried in vain to stop the last Viking invasion of England from reaching York. Days later, KIng Harold turned the tables at nearby Stamford Bridge , only to be trounced in his turn at Hastings.
Charles Jones is an archeologist and Territorial Army Officer who won a Lottery grant that helped him establish and preserve the battlefield of Fulford - the village on the southern edge of York that he rightly identifies at the third and forgotten battle of 1066 - after nearby Stamford Bridge and, of course, Hastings itself. Fu lford was where King Harold’s brothers-in-law the powerful northern Saxon earls, Edwin of Mercia and Morcar, of Northumberland attempted to stop the invading Viking army of Norway’s king Harald Hardrada and English KIng Harold’s treacherous brother Tostig from taking York and with it the northern portion of Harold’s kingdom. They failed, but the check they inflicted on the invaders just may have weakened the Vikings sufficently for Harold, marching rapidly from the south, to crushingly defeat them at Stamford Bridge a few days later. Jones skilfully integrates the story of the battle itself - deduced from studying the much changed battle site - with the wider context of 1066 - the three-way struggle for the English throne between Harald Hardrada, Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy - the conqueror who finally had the last laugh at Hastings.
