Few Second World War commanders suffered such reversals of fortune as Erich von Manstein. Hailed as a strategic genius in 1940 after his plan ‘Sichelschnitt’ - for an armoured thrust through the wooded Ardennes hills, by-passing the Maginot LIne - was enthusiastically adopted by Hitler and led to the complete defeat of the French armies and the rout of the BEF at Dunkirk inside a month - great things were expected of Manstein after the invasion of Russia in 1941.
