FALL OF TOULON: The Last Opportunity to Defeat the French Revolution

FALL OF TOULON: The Last Opportunity to Defeat the French Revolution
Toulon is a key moment in history as the first time that Napoleon came to the world’s attention. The young artillery officer helped turf the Royal Navy out of the port - and dashed Allied plans to destroy the French revolution. Naval historian Bernard Ireland tells the whole exciting story.
This book could also be sub-titled : ‘Napoleon’s first victory’ , since Toulon is important in Napoleon’s career as the moment when that unique military genius first commanded history’s attention by his siting of the guns that helped restore France’s premier Mediterranean naval base to the revolutionary Republican forces. Toulon had been seized by French Royalists who hoped to use it as a springboard for a counter-revolution across all France. They invited British, Spanish and Austrian forces - all united by their horror of the Revolution currently engulfing France - to assist, and in the spring of 1793 a multi-national task force, spearheaded by the Royal Navy - took control of the port and its warships. Unexpectedly, however, the French Republicans reacted quickly and efficiently, and Toulon was soon besieged by their Revolutionary army - with the young Bonaparte taking charge of the artillery. Distinguished naval historian Bernard Ireland tells the whole story of the siege and its inglorious climax, and shows how a combination of Allied bungling and Napoleon’s skill ensured the survival of revolutionary France - and the rise of Napoleon.
