EMPIRES COLLIDE: The French and Indian War 1754-63

EMPIRES COLLIDE: The French and Indian War 1754-63
Superbly illustrated story of the war - part of a wider global conflict - which saw the brief emergence of Britain over France as the dominant power in America.
The untamed, unmapped forests of North America and Canada was the forbidding terrain where the imperial ambitions of Britain and France collided in the mid-18th century, with the native American Indians holding the ring as they were torn between both sides. The fascinating story of the French and Indian wars - all part of a wider worldwide Anglo-French war - is told here in a beautifully produced and illustrated history. At first the British redcoats, used to the open fields of Europe, were unprepared for the unforgiving environment, but they learned new tactics from their native allies, adapted - and survived. By contrast the French, starting from an initially strong position, were starved of vital supplies thanks to the victories of the Royal Navy, and, under their talented commander, Montcalm, were forced to watch helplessly as their American empire crumbled - culminating in Wolfe’s great victory at Quebec. But the war set events in motion that ultimately doomed Britain’s American empire too - one of the soldiers fighting on Britain’s side in this war was a certain George Washingrton.
