DOWNSIDE AND THE WAR 1939-1945

DOWNSIDE AND THE WAR 1939-1945
A fine and beautifully produced memorial to the 106 Old Boys of the Roman Catholic Downside Abbey public school who died in WW II. Full obituaries and portraits of the fallen and Roll of Service.
This moving and beautifully produced book is a fine memorial to the 106 old boys of Downside Abbey - the distinguished Roman Catholic public school in Somerset - who died during the Second World War. As the late Lord Rawlinson - whose own brother, Michael, an RAF pilot, was killed in France in May 1940 - proudly writes in his introduction, the 106 who died represent ‘A truly remarkable figure for a school which..before World War II had amounted to not many more than two hundred’. (109 Old Gregorians died in the Great War). The international nature of Downside’s Catholic community is poignantly illustrated by two Old Gregorian Counts who died at the hands of the Russians rather than the Axis in 1941: Count Peter Wolff-Metternich who had an English mother but a German name and father. Although educated in England he returned to Germany and was killed on the Eastern Front. Another Old Gregorian, Poland’s Count Wladyslaw Zoltowski, was taken prisoner by the Soviets when they invaded the country in conjunction with the Nazis in 1939. Zoltowski was murdered in the notorious Katyn Forest massacre, along with 15,000 of his brother officers. As well as full obituaries of the deadthere is a Roll of service with full page portraits of most of the 106 who fell.
