DAPHNE: Synopsis of the Fanshawe Correspondence; West Coast of South America; Period 1849-1851
Captain Fanshawe was commanding HMS Daphne and arrived at Monte Video early in 1849. He gives an interesting descritpion of life in Monte Video which was at this time the scene of fighting between the Argentineans and the Uruguayans during a siege lasting 9 years from 1843 to 1852. Then follows a descritpion of the journey round Cape Horn, including a visit to the Falkland Islands On return from his voyage across the Pacific, he goes to Panama.Conditions here are chaotic owing to its position on the route to the Gold Rush in California, which is in full swing. Several cruises are undertaken includng one to Vancouver followed by San Francisco. From here he makes a 50 miles journey to see the mines at Santa Clara. The Letters themselves follow and there are a few postal markings - a typewritten transcript has been made of all the items for those interested enough to follow this fascinating story in detail.
