BOMBERS FIRST AND LAST
The story of Bomber Command’s most durable squadron, No. 9, who went to war on the first day and ended it by bombing Hitler’s mountain home.
No. 9 Squadron of RAF Bomber Command really were the first of the Few: they went into action on the second day of the war ( September 4th 1939); theyt were the first to engage the enemy; the first to get in a dogfight; the first to down an enemy aircraft ( and the first to be shot down by one); and later on in the war became the first to bomb the Bismarck’s sister ship Tirpitz while she was hidden in a Norwgian fjord. No. 9 fought through the war from the first to last, graduated from early Wellingtons to later Lancasters and provided some of the men who staged the ill-fated Great Escape from their PoW camp in Germany. They finished the war in the style to which they had become accustomed : by bombing HItler’s mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden to ruins in April 1945. This is their story.
