Although not one of the Battleground Europe series, this excellent little book is similar in format and content. It highlights many little-known actions, places of interest and activities of men who served there during the Great War. The first of Bruce Bairnsfather’s ‘Old Bill’ cartoons saw the light of day here and most of the British and Empire regiments of the BEF served in the trenches here. Tony Spagnoly’s familiarity with the battlefields of the Western Front is legendary, and this book is a sample of that knowledge. Marvellous photos of then and now and first class maps supplement a fascinating text. Highly recommended.
