This is an excellent and well-researched book, an admirable guide to America’s 38 battlefield parks. The author is not just providing advice on how to get there and what to see when you do, he has also set out to recreate the ebb and flow of battle, to connect the trails, landmarks and monuments and bring to life the events that occurred there. He has divided the contents geographically into North Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, south and West, and the battlefields visited range from the Revolutionary War, through the Civil War, the War of 1812, the Indian Wars to WW II. The maps (by Beth Silverman) are exactly what is wanted in a book of this nature, and there are many fascinating photographs taken at the time.
