ALL THE KAISER’S MEN. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE GERMAN ARMY ON THE WESTERN FRONT 1914-1918

ALL THE KAISER’S MEN. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE GERMAN ARMY ON THE WESTERN FRONT 1914-1918
Charts the progress of the German Army in the Great War, from initial successes through stalemate and attrition to final defeat.
This welcome book fills a gap in the historiography of the Great War being the first full study (that I have read) devoted to the fortunes and misfortunes of the German Army on the Western front ,by an English military historian. It examines the German Army’s strategy and tactics throughout the war from command level to the men in the trenches, using archival material and drawing on diaries, memoirs, regimental records and other official documents, all supported by original photos and maps. It looks, too, at the home front with the effects of the allied naval blockade, the hardships and the increasing problems of food and fuel supplies , exemplified by a harrowing description of the terrible winter of 1916/17, known as ‘The Turnip Winter’ because that vegetable, cooked every imaginable (and unimaginable!) way, became the staple diet. Appendices include: German ranks and British equivalent; organisation diagrams of the German infantry division in 1914 and in 1916; German Army weapons with their characteristics and ranges; biographies of selected senior officers and fighter pilots; and notes on the German War Graves Maintenance Association, which provides a similar service to our own CWGC. There is a glossary of German and British military words/terms, a substantial bibliography and an index. This book is a must for the serious student of the Great War and highly recommended for the casual reader who wants to know more about the conditions and fighting on the Western Front on the German side of the wire. The author was a regular officer for nearly eighteen years in the Royal Hampshire Regiment, commissioned from Sandhurst and studied at the Staff College and Keele University. His first book was Pillars of Fire (1998), an account of the battle of Messines in June 1917, the prelude to Third Ypres.
