AFTER ANTWERP: THE LONG HAUL TO VICTORY: The Part played by 4th Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in the Overthrow of the Third Reich September 1944 to May 1945

AFTER ANTWERP: THE LONG HAUL TO VICTORY: The Part played by 4th Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in the Overthrow of the Third Reich September 1944 to May 1945
Unit history of the 4th King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in the final months of the Second World War in Europe. After Antwerp, Arnhem and the Rhine the unit was also in at the death of the Doenitz Government.
As the sub-title indicates, this is the third volume in a unit history of the 4th King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, recording the role the Battalion played in the downfall of the Third Reich in 1944-45. Compiled by the author from original eye-witness accounts, the volume details the KSLI’s role in mopping up final pockets of German resistance west of the River Maas (Meuse) after the Allied capture of the port of Antwerp. The unit provided flank protection for ‘Operation Market Garden’ the heroic but unsuccessful attempt to ‘leapfrog the Rhine’ by British airbourne forces at Arnhem. It then took part in the battle of the Rhineland itself; the grim struggles in the Teutoburger Wald and elsewhere as fanatical Nazi ‘last ditchers’ put up a fierce final resistance. The coda to the KSLI’s unmatched role in the campaign to liberate north-west Europe was the final farcical disarmament of the Doenitz Government which had been appointed by Hitler before his death. This account, finally published half-a-century after the events it describes, is accompanied by plentiful photographs and the unit’s battle honours, awards, and rolls of honour.
