A PARTY FIT FOR HEROES: His Majesty’s Garden Party for recipients of the Victoria Cross 26th June 1920
Unique written and pictorial record of King George V’s garden party for VC winners from the Indian Mutiny to the 1919 intervention in Russia.
King George V's Buckingham Palace Garden Party, on 26 June 1920 for recipients of the VC, was the first official reunion of VC holders since the supreme award for valour was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856. A total of 310 recipients attended representing campaigns from the Indian Mutiny to the intervention in Russia in 1919. The book has a number of photographs published for the first time and the recollections are included of a number of VCs who attended. The book also gives valuable social insights into the atmosphere of 1920 - shortly after the aftermath of the First World War. Three appendices lists all the VCs present and include the marching order to the Palace and order of presentation to the King and Queen. The foreword is written by Bill Speakman VC who was awarded the VC for action in Korea in 1950. A fascinating book which breaks new ground and is a must for anyone with an interest in the VC in this 150th anniversary year of the first VC investiture.
