The author of this remarkable book was head of intelligence and security at General Montgomery’s Tactical Headquarters - Tac HQ - from 1943 to 1946. Sgt Kirby was responsible for ensuring the safety of Britain’s foremost Second World War soldier, and in performing his duties had a ringside view of many of the war’s key events. Kirby was also Monty’s interpreter, and was at his side as the Allied forces pushed forwards from the beaches of Normandy to the heart of Germany via the liberation of France, Belgium and Holland. Dealing with spies, agent provocateurs, and traitors - as well as genuine Resistance fighters - Kirby depended on his trained and acute powers of observation to spot danger and keep his chief safe. He also dealt with such explosive person alities as Churchill, Eisenhower, De Gaulle as the decisive battles of the war were fought - and not always against the enemy!
