ROMAN INVASIONS OF BRITAIN
New account of the Roman invasions by Julius Caesar and Claudius which seeks to explain them by studying marine archaeology, and the changing patterns of weather, tides and coastal erosion.
It took the Romans three attempts - all in Kent - before they successfully invaded and occupied Britain. Juiius Caesar came twice - in 55 and 54 BC; - to see but not to conquer; he settled for a raid in force to punish the troublesome Britons who were helping his opponents, their Celtic cousins in Gaul. Almost a century later, the Romans returned, in the form of the Emperor Claudius’ major landing; and this time they stayed. Later, during the decline of the Empire after the legions had abandoned Britain to defend the Roman heartland, under Constantinus Chlorus in 296AD they made one more descent - to attack the forts of Britain’s new occupiers, the Saxon shore. Gerald Grainge, a former local government officer who has devoted his retirement to studying the invasions, approaches them ftom a new angle : he uses marine archaeology and the patterns of changing weather, tidal and coastal conditions to examine the likely sites of the Roman attacks; the obstacles they faced and the ships and tactics they used to overcome them. It is a new approach to the history of Roman Britain and a stimulating and convincing one.
